Self-Awareness Is The Key
In order to live truthfully under imaginary circumstances, we must first know what the truth is. Self-Awareness is different than self-confidence. Self Awareness is not judgmental, it is seeks to reveal truth. Truth is fact. It has no right or wrong, but it is true. If we begin to understand our base colors, we can better choose the variations of hue within our artistic creations. In order to enliven a character, void of the prejudice of our own personal lens, we must force ourselves to become detectives, searching for the clues that lead us to become intimately familiar with our true selves. Vocal, Intellectual, Emotional, Physical, and Spiritual transparency of who we currently are: These are the keys that will unlock the doors to our futures. Wear comfortable clothing, and please come as you ARE...not as you one day hope to BECOME. The truth shall set you free. Please due to the soul-searching tasks and personal explorations that we will engage in during our
session-No observers. Only those who will actively participate are invited to attend.

How to Succeed in Musical Theatre Without Really Trying: A Practical Workshop for the Singing Actor
What would you do if you were walking down a street and suddenly the person beside you broke into song? You're just minding your own business and this weirdo next to you begins singing about how often he has walked this street before, but when he’s done it in the past, the pavement always stayed beneath his feet. Would you assume that this man was several stories high and walk faster? While trying to get away from this potentially dangerous weirdo, you turn a corner and come face to face with a malicious street gang whose members are armed with switchblades and zip guns. Most likely you would assume you had entered some alternative reality. The key word here is reality. You are still in reality; it's just that you have entered the reality of a musical. This workshop will help you understand the skills and techniques required to sing and act simultaneously within the musical theater song.

Keith Hamilton Cobb AMERICAN MOOR
The intelligent, intuitive, indomitable, large, black, American male actor explores Shakespeare’s Othello, race, and America… not necessarily in that order.
American Moor is an 85 minute solo play written and performed by Keith Hamilton Cobb, examining the experience and perspective of black men in America through the metaphor of William Shakespeare’s character, Othello.
It was conceived and written in the fall of 2012, and had its first reading in March of 2013. It was first publicly performed under the direction of Paul Kwame Johnson as an offering of the Humanities Institute at Westchester Community College in November of 2013, with funding from The National Endowment for the Humanities. Its second public performance was on March 1st, 2014 in the theatre of the Yonkers Riverfront Library, Yonkers, NY, and it has since been performed for Luna Stage Company in West Orange, NJ, February/March, 20015, produced by Phoenix Theatre Ensemble, Manhattan, April/May, 2015, and The Anacostia Playhouse, Anacostia, Washington D.C. July/August, 2015.
American Moor is not an “angry black man play.” Rather the widely diverse audiences that have experienced it echo the piece’s awareness that we see only what we want to see of one another, and that we all long to be wholly noticed and wholly embraced. It is a play about race in America, but it is also a play about who gets to make art, who gets to play Shakespeare, about the qualitative decline of the American theatre, about actors and acting, and about the nature of unadulterated love. It is an often funny, often heartbreaking examination of the pall of privileged perspective that is ultimately so injurious to us all.
See more at: http://keithhamiltoncobb.com

Tickets will be available for this performance in the Cripple Creek Foyer at 8:00 AM on the day of the show. Tickets are first come first serves and you must be present with your festival lanyard to receive a ticket.

Physical Partnering: Cooperative Competition through Objective/Obstacle & Listening
This will be a hands-on exploration of being the best hands-on scene partner, as well as a tactile metaphor for our larger acting principles. This workshop seeks to re-introduce Mary Overlie’s Viewpoints in their original form, and as subsequently applied within two innovative programs, New York University’s Experimental Theater Wing and Naropa University’s MFA Theater: Contemporary Performance Program. The Viewpoints are much more than a composition language, or tool of deconstruction, they have served generations of students as a deeply personal laboratory to build acting technique based on transformative exploration of the body-mind and environment. We will identify the full pallet of the Six Viewpoints through mindfulness/awareness improvisation practice locating the intersection of meditation and action, with particular emphasis on emotion and storytelling.

It Goes Without Saying
Join us for this fun and unflinching look at the life and mimes of Bill Bowers. It Goes Without Saying takes the audience on a scenic tour of Bill's life thus far: from growing up gay in the wilds of Montana, his outrageous jobs as a performer, studying with Marcel Marceau, and the whirlwind of working on Broadway. Bill observes the incredible power that silence can wield - whether on stage, between family members, among neighbors, or when we are alone. Bill talks (yes, talks) with sensitivity, precision, and constant humor about a life lived out loud.

House opens 30 minutes prior to curtain.

Tickets will be available for this performance in the Cripple Creek Foyer at 8:00 AM on the day of the show. Tickets are first come first serves and you must be present with your festival lanyard to receive a ticket.

Bly's Kafka's Train Exercise
This unique playwriting exercise is inspired by Franz Kafka's hilarious journal entry "The First Train Journey" in which he recounts isolating himself from his fellow travelers. The exercise asks the workshop writers to imagine themselves embarking on a familiar late night train ride where they fall asleep and upon awakening discover an unexpected train world never before encountered in their travels. Deploying only a few facts and parameters given by Bly the playwrights will write a 5-10 minute play based on a magical "what if" that each writer will generate ranging freely in creating their own characters, plot, acting vocabulary, and stage event and world. After writing the play we will read each play aloud and respond to the newly written play.

Audience Talkbacks: Structure, Topics, and Guiding the Discussion
Audience talkbacks can be frustrating and are often difficult to structure/control. Do you attempt lecture and enforce strict topics of discussion (and risk boring the audience to tears) or do you give the audience agency to pursue their own questions and responses (and risk a “hijacked” and less than relevant talkback)? What do you want the audience to get out of it? The cast and crew? In this session, we will explore a range of approaches to restructuring talk backs and encouraging productive engagement on the part of all involved. Students and faculty welcome.

Creative Differences: Improving Communication to Enhance Collaboration
How can we collaborate when conflict(s) arise? When your fellow designer insists on using the least flattering gel color? When your costar makes a pigsty of your shared makeup space? When that actor seemingly cannot, or simply will not, incorporate your director’s notes? Etcetera, etcetera… Argh!! Conflict is inevitable, but the result of our disagreements, whether destabilizing or constructive, is up to us! Simply put, this workshop will be a discussion on how we talk to one another. Participants will learn practical, evidence-based techniques for handling difficult conversations so that we can create more collaboratively and keep the drama where it belongs; on the stage.

Stage Managers Role in Maintaining the Show: Advocating for the Absent
Maintaining a show is a function stage managers don't often learn in school, but it requires finely tuned skills. As advocate for director, producer, designers, actors, and sustainability of production, the stage manager is integral in maintaining the artistic product. How can one begin to learn those skills in the educational environment? How can one successfully note peers those who are older? How does one balance advocating for all individuals involved?

How do we communicate with our audience? There is a language that we all learn early on in life that actors, directors, choreographers and even designers can use to tell their audiences a story without ever speaking -- using the basic elements of design!

The Stage Manager is Your Best Friend: Communication is the Key to Collaboration
The Director and the Stage Manager each play a crucial role in the life of any production. Ideally theirs is a relationship marked by collaboration and mutual respect. But while many directors have an acting background, and are thus sensitive to the needs of the actor, few have ever worn the hat of the stage manager. The result is an all-too-frequent failure to appreciate the stage manager's needs and duties. Having worked as a professional stage manger as well as a director, workshop leader Brian Guerrero will help directors understand the inadvertent ways they may be blocking, disrespecting or limiting the person who should be their closest collaborator. Participants will learn, create and share strategies for cultivating this relationship. A productive director/stage manager relationship will have immense benefits for both parties and for the production as a whole. Though this workshop is geared towards Directors, students interested in Stage Management are encouraged to participate.

Bringing Focus to the World of the Play
We'll talk about one way a director can focus their conceptual approach to any play and answer many questions, such as: How is behavior motivated in the world of this play? What kind of pressures does this world put on the characters? Are characters motivated by the external or internal in this play? What is the point of view regarding the individual and society? Are we primarily looking at individuals or a society? You'll be introduced to the "values compass", which has proven to be a useful tool to many directors in approaching these questions, and will help you work with both actors and designers, as well as clarify and unify your own thinking.

Acting Through Choreography
Don't just learn choreography, learn how to play through it in this experiential movement workshop. Actors too often approach learned steps merely hoping to execute them; we'll explore how to approach movements as actions and find verbs to play within a given phrase. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of choreography as another text to make choices about.

Heightened Language: Sound, Body, and Resonance
This workshop explores physical and vocal tools that allow actors to approach heightened language such as Shakespeare with an experiential, full-bodied command of the text. This is a playful, interactive and physical workshop for actors that seeks to create a powerful connection to sound and language by exploring: 1) the speech sounds that make up the text, 2) the actors’ use of their body in creating sound, 3) and our experience of resonance in the sound and text. Dress for light movement. No preparation is necessary, though actors may bring a brief selection of Shakespeare or other heightened text.

Summit New Play Reading - Lucha and Bolie are ready to start their own all-female mariachi band. The only things standing in their way are a male-dominated music scene, patriarchical pressure from inside their families and finding the right women to fill out their sound.

House opens 30 minutes prior to curtain.

Tickets will be available for this performance in the Cripple Creek Foyer at 8:00 AM on the day of the show. Tickets are first come first serves and you must be present with your festival lanyard to receive a ticket.
